Footlocker info and registration

The Footlocker website can be found here. The price for meet registration went up today, but is still open.  Right now it is $40 through the 27th.  Register for the race based on class in school.  There is a tentative race schedule on the website.  It could change based on registration numbers.

All costs will need to be paid in the office before we leave.  It would be best if it were paid next week. We also need the assumption of risk forms and the medical forms notarized and turned in next week as well.  All of those have to be done before we go.

Food prices in California are a little higher than here, so plan on $15 or more per meal.  The kids will be staying 4 to a room to keep costs down.  The rooms will have two queen beds.

The individual costs will be $400, pay at the Hillcrest office.

Itinerary:

Wednesday Dec 1 - we will be loading the charter bus after school and the goal is to leave by 3 pm.  We will be stopping at Nephi for a driver change.  Drivers need to stop every so often by law, so we will use those stops as our bathroom and food breaks. We will be getting to the hotel late Wednesday night/early Thursday morning.

Thursday Dec 2 - we will have a morning run and then eat breakfast and load the bus for Knott's Berry Farm where we will spend most of the day.  We will have dinner either near the hotel, or on the way back from Knott's

Friday Dec 3 - We will start the morning at Mt. SAC where we will do a course jog and get our registration materials.  After we finish with that, we will go to Huntington Beach where we will spend a few hours and have lunch at various places.

Saturday Dec 4 -  The races will go from approximately 7 am to 11 am and then we will check out of the hotel and return to SLC.  We will be stopping for meals along the way and a driver change in Beaver before returning at about midnight.

10:30 am Boys 5A race

Parking and admission:

Spectator parking will enter the first gate of the complex.

Vehicles with two-or-less individuals inside the car will be charged $10; vehicles with three or-more individuals will be charged $20. RV’s and other oversize vehicles will be charged at $40, due to the use of multiple parking spots. Vehicles will be issued wristbands at the entrance gates for the corresponding numbers of individuals inside the vehicle. Parking passes can be purchased on the UHSAA GoFan online ticket portal at https://gofan.co/app/school/UHSAA or purchased at the gate. A convenience credit card fee will be charged as part of the purchase. There will be no cash option for purchase. It is advised for everyone to pre-purchase parking passes to allow for faster parking and entrance into the facility.

Results All meet results will be posted live to the Internet. As soon as a runner crosses a timing point, those results will be posted live to the results page. We expect the time interval to be less than 10 seconds between the runner crossing a timing point and the result being displaying on the results page. Timing points will be located at the 1-mile, 2-mile and the finish line marks. Results at each timing point will display both the individual positions & times and team positions & score. When results are posted live, at this point they are still unofficial. Once the Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals of the top three finishers are displayed at the top of the Overall Full Results page, the results are considered official. Results can be found on the RunnerCard website.

Rules Reminder

Assistance to Competitors Coaches, please educate the members of your team, their parents and others that will come to support your student athletes that per rule 9-7-4 it is a disqualification for a competitor who receives any assistance from another person. The most common form of the violation of this rule is when a non-competitor runs along side a competitor during the race (pacing). This has been a problem in the past. It would be unfortunate to have to disqualify a runner for the actions of someone not in the race. Please help by informing those who will be there to support your team. Also, any runner who assists another runner will also be disqualified.

Championship Season Week 5 (State & JV State)

This week is what we have been working toward since Memorial Day.  Make sure you are getting enough sleep, that is really the only way to improve your times for this week's meets.

5A Divisionals Information

The 5A state final qualifying meet will again be held at Lakeside Park in Orem. It will be a wet and cold day and the course will probably be a little chewed up and muddy by the time we race on it after the four 6A races earlier in the day.

The entire team is welcome to come on the bus and cheer on their teammates.

Sufficient layers or water proof clothing will be a good idea this day.

We will not be able to get school lunch that day with our early departure, so everyone will need to bring their own food.  The timing of the meet makes that better for meal planning anyway.

There will be 17 teams in our qualifying races, the top 12 teams will go to state.  The top 6 individuals from non-qualifying teams will also go to state.

Racing Season Week 5 (BYU Autumn Classic)

Due to the Labor Day holiday, our post-race debrief meeting will be on Tuesday at 2:30 in Hurst's room. It shouldn't be that difficult to come up with positives about this race for most of you.

Remember you should be at practice each day.  There are some unavoidable reasons to miss practice, make sure you are communicating with the coaching staff in all of these cases. We are about 3 weeks out from region, and 5 from divisional, so we need to keep fitness at a high level. If you can't make the morning runs at the track, get them done on your own, cross-training is acceptable if necessary.

All runs are subject to change with a forecast of more smoke in the area, so hopefully it won't be too bad.

Racing Season Week 2

The summer mileage reporting season has ended.  Make sure you get your mileage tracker sheets in this week so we can get the mileage shirts purchased.

We still have a few athletes who need to finish the registration on registermyathlete. That as well as a physical on file and the $60 participation fee must be done before the next meet.

We may have interesting weather and air quality issues this week, so we may have to be flexible with some of our workouts.

As we start the routine of school and practice, make sure you are getting enough sleep, fuel, and hydration.  Wash your hands frequently to help avoid having a cold or worse rip through the team. If you forget a water bottle, I will usually have some in my room.

We will have morning recovery runs every morning at 6, meet on the track except in cases of bad air or really bad weather and then we will meet above the main gym.

If you are in a weights class or the athletics class, I don't want you doing weights in the mornings.

The races today were encouraging, but we have some work to do before we get to championship season in October.  Results are on athletic.net. At the moment of posting, they are incomplete, but you can see placing in the varsity races.  They lost many of the boys times in the JV race.  If you don't see your time in the results, but know it, let me know.

We will have race photos for this meet, thanks to Ella.  Once they are posted online, additional information will come.

XC Camp/Summer Training Week 11 - Racing Season Week 1

Welcome to the last week of summer training. This will be our first week of afternoon practice. Two procedural things need to be taken care of this week for those that haven't already done so.  1) This is the last week for summer camp registration.  If you haven't already registered for summer camp, which ends this week, take care of that at this link. 2) All high school athletes must be registered for their sport on registermyathlete.com and have a physical on file each school year with the school.  No athlete may compete until those two steps are completed.  The UHSAA physical form is on the registermyathlete site.

Uniforms for new team members will be handed out this week.  Plain black shorts will need to be provided by the athlete.  I have shorts for both boys and girls that can be purchased in the office for $18. For girls I have both the running shorts and spanks styles.

This is the first week of our primary practice moving to the afternoon.  I will be at the track each morning at 6 for the 30 minute recovery run, but these runs can be done at home as well.

We will have to deal with bad air this week, so look to the group chat and/or Instagram for contingency plans.

Wednesday August 11 Highland Run

XC Camp/Summer Training Week 10 - Time Trial Week

Competition Eligibility: The season is fast approaching.  There is a checklist of things that will need to be done before our first meet: 1) all documents on registermyathlete.com need to be completed 2) a physical on the approved UHSAA form needs to be submitted either to the AD or on registermyathlete 3) the $60 participation fee needs to be paid. That can be done either on registermyathlete or through the Hillcrest office.  This is different than the summer camp fee.  Also, remember you needed a 2.0 or above for 4th quarter last year to be eligible to compete.

Summer Camp: The deadline for the camp registration is approaching, if you haven't already done that, please do so.

XC Camp/Summer Training Week 9

Congratulations on surviving HARC week and a huge thank you to the families that helped out with breakfast after the morning runs all week.

Mileage shirt update: to be on track to earn the mileage shirt for the summer you should be at about 290 miles, 180 for our middle schoolers.  We have 3 weeks left.  Make sure you have been keeping track of your miles on the mileage tracker sheet or another method.

The start of the high school season is rapidly approaching, make sure you have completed all the documents on registermyathlete and have submitted a physical. I want all team members on register my athlete by August 1st with physicals submitted by August 10th.  Our first meet is August 14th.

We may be dealing with air quality issues again this week, so some run locations may be changed at the last minute. Notification will go out on Instagram @hillcrestruningco and on the captain's group me.

Just a reminder that when we have travel runs, the car caravan leaves Hillcrest at 6:05.  You can also go directly to the run site if you prefer.

XC Camp/Summer Training Week 3

We are starting the second daily run this week.  It will be hot, so make sure you are hydrated and pay attention to air quality.  The afternoon and evening is when air quality is usually worst. I would prefer that beginners wait until next week when hopefully this heat wave has passed.

As we continue with our summer training camp experience, make sure you are taking care of your body.  You need to be eating enough protein and carbs to fuel your body through the training of the summer. The amount of calories is dependent on your size and miles totals, so fuel up.  Hydration is also crucial.  A good rule of thumb is drink half of your body weight. So if you are 150 lbs, you should be drinking about 75 ounces of fluid a day.

The camp registration site is live, make sure you go online and register. Please register by the end of June.

Remember that physicals are required for the high school season.  If you can't get into your regular doctor, TOSH will be doing physicals during the summer.  They we will be doing them in the late afternoon/evening on June 29th and July 27th.  Registration will be required at least 4 days in advance.  Appointments can be made at (801) 314-4119

Thursday June 17 cemetery run - meet at Hillcrest at 6 am  we will doing strength and core work after the run - bring resistance bands if you have one

Friday June 18 Jordan River  Trail - meet at Hillcrest at 6 am for the caravan or at Jordan River Rotary Park at 6:20

Saturday June 19 Recovery Run - do this run on your own, preferably with family or friends for experienced runners, this should be 45 - 60 minutes long; for beginning runners it should be be 30 - 45 minutes.  Cross training would also be a good option for this day.  If you are on a family bike ride or hike that day, that can count as your weekend recovery run Do it early before the heat really hits

High School mileage goal - 36.36 miles is the weekly average you need to hit for the summer

Middle School mileage goal - 25 miles is the weekly average you need to hit for the summer

Most of you will be a little less than that average for the first few weeks and it is ok. For example, I did 33 miles this week and I am planning hitting the 400 with miles to spare

Summer XC Info

Here is a link to a slides presentation that has the information we went over during the meeting last week.   A couple pieces of information, the UHSAA moratorium starts on July 4th, so we won't be meeting that week.  HARC week will be the week of the 19th.

Also I know that people will be going on vacation during the summer, so as much as I would like to see everybody every day, I know that isn't realistic.   Try to get miles in during the vacation.

The camp has been approved, go online and register.

TOSH will doing physicals for fairly low cost this summer, I will get the dates out to the kids and post them here as well.

Our 2021 fundraising campaign is underway.  We are doing a donation campaign.  We are asking the athletes to email and text people they know to ask for donations.  We are also encouraging them to put the information out on their social media accounts.  Each one of the them should have a half flier with a QR code that will lead to the donation page.  I have more if needed.  Go to successfund.com/hillcresttrack for the donations page.

Also, encourage people to put the name of the athlete they are supporting in the comments section.

Track Season Announcement

Practice will being on Feb. 22.  Meet in the bleachers at the NW corner of the stadium. There are no tryouts, if you keep coming to practice, you are on the team.

COVID-19 testing will be mandatory, if you missed the testing on the 16th, we are working on a make up date, stay tuned to the instagram account

Make sure you have the necessary permission forms completed.  There is a paper form that needs to be turned in your first time testing as well as the online form.  Both forms only need to be done once.

Get on registermyathlete.com  and complete the registration forms.  This needs to be done before you come to practice.

You will also need to get a physical.  The form can be found and submitted on the site.  You can also turn in the paper copy to the main office.

The participation fee for track is $75.  This can be paid on registermyathlete or in the main office.

You will need appropriate gear for training.  You will need clothing for many kinds of weather, be prepared for anything.

We have both team gear and optional gear.

Team gear will be purchased through the school.  Everyone will need to buy a $25 singlet, and shorts.  I have shorts and spanks available for $18 or you can provide your own.  The uniform shorts are plain black.  They can only have one logo and can't have the brand name on the waistband.

We also have team jackets for $55 and team backpacks for $36.
